The Department’s Orientations

The University of Montréal’s Department of Communication offers a bachelors programme in communication which is forming a new generation of communication specialists. Are you interested in business communication, computerized communication, multimedia, television, publicity, public opinion surveys, video clips, public relations or legislation on the information highway? With the explosion of new communicational technologies and the emergence of information society, the number of fields of action that could interest you is increasing.

The Department of Communication of the University of Montréal is there to help you meet these new challenges. It offers you solid training that will allow you to plan, conceptualize and apply communication strategies.

The Department of Communication has two orientations:

  • The mass media and new technology orientation is mainly focused on the social, cultural, legal and institutional aspects of media.
  • The organizational orientation focuses on all forms of communication, internal or external, which are seen in businesses.

The fields of application are varied and constantly evolving. Therefore, the Department of Communication forms not technicians, but rather communication professionals whose expertise rests on context analysis as well as on the design and development of communication strategies. Thanks to this approach, the training provided by the University of Montréal will not become outmoded by the rapid evolution of technologies.

The academic programs offered by the department:

The Department of Communication of the University of Montréal offers undergraduate, graduate, and Ph.D programs.

The admission forms for these different programs are available at the secretariat of the Department of Communication.

Undergraduate Programs

  • Bachelor’s degree in communication
This program aims to form individuals capable of conceptualizing, planning, and organizing communication strategies or conducting research studies in communication. It provides communication specialists with analysis grids and interpretation models, enabling them to contribute to the goals of the different environments in which they will be taking part.
  • Major in communication

The major offers a solid base for students who wish to work in the world of communication. The bachelor’s program composed of a major in communication and a minor or certificate in another field allows students to explore the foundations of communication while exploring another discipline as well.

  • Minor in communication

The minor in communication is a good starting point as well as a useful complement to several other programs of study. It is designed to offer an introduction to communication theory, develop knowledge and provide students with a scientific work method. Combined with a major in another discipline or with two other minors, it can lead to a bachelor’s degree.

  • Bidisciplinary bachelor’s degree in communication and political science

This program, developed jointly with the political science department, aims to offer training which links the disciplines of communication studies and political science. This program is managed by the Department of Political Science. Please contact Richard Nadeau at 514-343-2163 for additional information on this program.

Graduate Programs

Matster's Level

  • Graduate Studies Certificate: Communication in Changing Organizations
To answer the particular needs of those who are interested in communicational issues pertaining to the changes undergone by present day organizations, the Department of Communication has developed a new short program of graduate studies centered on this theme. The objective of this program is to discuss current communicational issues with students. This program is intended for students who already have a university education and who would like to pursue continuing education.
  • Master’s Degree
The master’s program in communication science offers students an instruction which will allow them to analyse, plan and evaluate contemporary communicational phenomena as well as the issues that stem from them.

As the concerns arising from professional practice of communication and communication research are varied, the Department of Communication offers several different options in its master’s program.

By their selection of courses and research subject, students may choose to specialize in one or another of the two options offered: Media Communication or Organizational Communication. These two options reflect the fields of specialty of the University of Montréal’s Department of Communication.

The master’s in communication program also offers students the possibility to write either a thesis or a directed essay. The number of courses that must be taken as well as the extent of research vary in each of the two possibilities.

People who are interested in the master’s program will find more information in the Guide des études en communication : Maîtrise et Doctorat.

  • Ph.D.

At the Ph.D. level, the Department of Communication offers a joint program with the Université du Québec à Montréal and Concordia University. The research areas are the following:

  • Social and cultural aspects of information technology
  • Discourse analysis and media messages
  • Organisation and communication networks
  • Communication and development

People who are interested in the Ph.D. program will find more information in the Guide des études en communication : Maîtrise et Doctorat.
