FOR PUBLIC

BROADCASTING

and the Spry Memorial Lecture

"Broadcasting, primarily, is an instrument of education in its widest significance, ranging from play to learning, from recreation to the cultivation of public opinion, and it concerns and influences not any single element in the community, but the community as a whole."
GRAHAM SPRY, "A Case for Nationalized Broadcasting", 1931

The Université de Montréal and Simon Fraser University have received an extraordinary endowment from the friends and family of the late Graham Spry, a champion of Canadian public broadcasting. The purpose of this endowment is to sponsor an annual public lecture and related academic activities relevant to the promotion of public broadcasting in Canada.

Each year, a public keynote lecture by an eminent Canadian or international figure is delivered at the Université de Montréal and at Simon Fraser University. The distinguished lecturer spends several days on each campus participating in seminars, meetings and consultations with faculty and graduate students. These activities are designed to stimulate further interest in themes related to public broadcasting within the academic community.

The tenth annual Spry Memorial Lecture was given in Vancouver on November 10th 2005. Exceptionally, a labour dispute led to the cancellation of the lecture that was to be held at l’Université de Montréal. After conferring with members of the Spry family, and taking into account the great topicality of the lecture prepared by this year’s guest, Dr. Marc Raboy, it was decided that the event would not be held in Montreal this year. The series will return to its normal bicoastal format next year, when the 2006 Spry Memorial Lecture be held in Vancouver and Montreal.
